About the position:
We are seeking a reporter to join
The Bond Buyer, a financial services brand covering the intersection of public finance, politics, and infrastructure. The qualified candidate will join a team of reporters focused on how governments across the United States pay for the infrastructure they build and maintain, and the services they provide to their citizens.
Responsibilities:
In this role, you will develop and cultivate a wide-ranging beat focused on state and local government finance across the midwestern United States, with a particular focus on the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. Duties will include reporting and breaking news on a tight deadline, researching and writing a mix of breaking news and analytical feature articles each week, working closely with editors and other colleagues across multiple coverage areas, and attending select industry conferences and press events.
The ideal candidate has a passion for breaking news and explanatory journalism, with the proven ability to cultivate sources, generate story ideas and scoops, and distill complex subject matter and jargon into clear, concise writing.
Qualifications:

Three or more years experience, ideally covering finance and/or government

In-depth knowledge and understanding of the political and financial scene in Chicago and Illinois, or the willingness and ability to absorb it quickly

Excellent explanatory writing, reporting and news management skills including the ability to report and break news on tight deadline

Ability to work independently and multi-task on a constant basis, plus work well as part of a team of editors and reporters

Familiarity with web publishing and content management systems

Preferred candidates also possess skills, experience, and interest in social media, audio journalism, and podcasting
