The Geropsychiatry position specializes in the evaluation and treatment of older adults. The clinician conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and develops indivi dualized treatment plans based on current, evidenced-based therapies. All the common psychiatric problems in the elderly, including memory problems, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, substance use disorders, sleep disorders and others, are assessed in a complete biopsychosocial manner. The position is largely carried out in the outpatient setting, but inpatient hospitalization is available if appropriate. A full array of ancillary medical and neurological assessments is available where necessary. Treatment services include pharmacologic therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as well as individual and family therapy. Other duties may be assigned by Mental Health management team.

Clinical supervision of resident psychiatrists and nurse practitioners is expected. The psychiatrist will be part of the psychiatry department's call system, providing telephone based supervision to on-call resident psychiatrists approximately one weekday night per month, and providin g both on-site inpatient rounding and telephone supervision to resident psychiatrists approximately one weekend day per month. The psychiatrist will be expected to develop proficiency in the use of telehealth equipment for the provision of psychiatric care at a distance. Training is provided. Additional assigned administrative duties, such as participation in committees, is likely.

The psychiatrist will be eligible, if desired, for clinical appointment to the Department of Psychiatry at the affiliated Quillen College of Medicine. The option to become involved in medical student and resident psychiatrist didactics is available .

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine . The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board certification in Psychiatry, or Board Eligibility within two years of completion of Psychiatry residency is preferred.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Physicians should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeating bending. They should be emotionally and mentally stable and capable of performing the duties of the position.
