DUTIES:
NOTE: A Recruitment/Relocation Incentive up to 20% has been authorized for a highly qualified candidate. A two year length of service agreement is required. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) has been authorized.

The incumbent serves as a psychiatrist in the Mental Health Service (MHS) and provides comprehensive clinical services to veterans and their families primarily in the Emergency Department (ED) at VAMC Memphis. The incumbent will perform general psychiatric assessment and treatment in a multi-disciplinary setti! ng composed of emergency medical physicians, triage and emergency medic! al nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, physician extenders, inpatient flow coordinators, nurse transfer coordinators, and a variety of rehabilitation/recovery therapists. The incumbent will work closely with his/her colleagues to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art mental health care. As many of these patients suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, experience and competence in treating this condition is desirable. The incumbent shall work under the direction of the Director of Psychiatry.

The incumbent will provide coverage to the Mental Health Outpatient Clinic, inpatient units, and other psychiatry duties as needed.

Routine work is performed with a minimum of supervision. Employee will be required to perform duties on his/her own initiative. As a psychiatrist in the ED, the incumbent will operate in a manner promoting success in all applicable performance measures and ensuring compliance with all applicable accredit! ation standards.

The employee shall act in a thoroughly professional manner at all times.

He/she shall work in harmony with other members of the professional and technical staff; tact and courtesy are mandatory when interacting with patients and staff.

The psychiatrist will be involved with supporting, promoting, and enhancing the Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship programs at the VAMC.

Work hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am- 5:30pm.

On call may be required after 5:30pm and on weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.

Licensure and Registration - Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commo! nwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of ! Columbia.. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA Educational requirements.

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required. First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Cou! ncil on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed OR Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
