About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a sixty-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a fifty three county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

KEY REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

DUTIES:
Tour of Duty: 7:30pm to 7:30am on any day of the week unless otherwise specified. Coverage on weekends will be covered through the incumbents of these positions or Fee Basis.

A RELOCATION OR RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE IS BEING OFFERED FOR THIS POSITION. WHEN AUTHORIZED, INCENTIVE MAY BE PAID UP TO 25% OF PAY. Incumbent must sign an agreement to remain with the VAMC Memphis for a minimum of two-years.

Description of Duties : The VA Medical Center Memphis, a level 1A VA facility, is seeking full-time Orthopedic Surgeon, board certified or board eligible in internal medicine.

  • Use surgical, medical or physical means to investigate, preserve and restore functions to a patient's extremities or spine.
  • Deal with both primary and secondary musculoskeletal issues of a patient's central nervous system, such as tumors, injuries, degenerative disease, trauma, congenital deformities and infections.
  • Specialize in the muscles, ligaments, bones, tendons, joints and nerves, which let our bodies move.
  • Specialize in such areas as foot and ankle orthopedics, orthopedic sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics, adult reconstructive orthopedics, musculoskeletal oncology, orthopedic spine surgery, hand surgery and orthopedic trauma.
  • Provide medical care by performing physical exams, designing treatment and therapeutic plans, and keeping track of patient progress to determine what needs to be done.
  • Perform back and spinal surgeries, joint replacement surgery, and repair fractures in bones.
  • Accepting patient referrals from other physicians, reviewing records and planning treatment options.
Meeting with patients to proceed with specialized testing or further examination of the physical condition that lead to the referral. Examining patients including physical examinations, ordering x-rays, MRI's or other testing sources. Booking surgery rooms and notifying support staff of surgery times. Ensuring that all supporting personnel are notified and prepared for the surgery or procedure. Planning specialized after surgery care, coordinating follow up medical support and meeting with patients after surgery to answer questions and monitor recovery. Managing record keeping, patient charts and all required surgical and hospital records as needed.

  • Will assign physician assistants and technicians to specific duties and surgeries and make sure everyone is taking part in helping the department to operate smoothly. Plan a specialized care after the surgery.
  • Will also assist in teaching residents.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Qualification Requirements :
a. Citizenship - US Citizenship required unless US Citizens are not available . Non-citizens may be appointed when no citizens are available in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) supports the Exchange Visitor Program and the 2-year home residence requirement and seeks waivers only when it is clearly in the interest of the Department and its programs.

b. Education - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine, and board certification in Internal Medicine are required.

c. Licensure and Registration - Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States , or in the District of Columbia .

d. Physical Standards - Applicant must meet the physical standards established for this position.

e. English Language Proficiency - Applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(s) and 7407(d).
