About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which incl! udes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based! outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

NOTE: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidateÂ's edu! cation and experience and recommend the step at which the candidate will be placed in that specific grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05 to GS-08. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidateÂ's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Background and! -or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (General) performs a variety of difficult radiographic examinations. The incumbent receives patients and determines type of procedures to be accomplished and explains the method of procedure to the patient. The incumbent determines the technical factors to be used, sets up and adjusts necessary equipment required for the requested examinations. Performs radiographic examinations of the skull, torso and extremities for routine physical examinations, and for diagnosis of illness or injuries to accident victims. Determines the technical factors to be used, sets up and adjusts necessary equipment required for the requested examinations. Assists radiologist during a variety of fluoroscopic examinations; GI series, barium enemas, air contrast barium enemas, cholecsystograms, barium swallows and examinations for movement of the diaphragm. The incumbent is responsible for adjusting controls o! n equipment such as intensifiers, magnetic tape recorders and television monitors to sharpen the image.

Work Schedule 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday. Rotating weekends and holidays. Rotating tours as needed. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
a. U. S. Citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
b. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).
c. Experience or Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associateÂ's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in! radiology.

(1) Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiati! on Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
(2) Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for ARRT (R) certification may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under the authority of 38 USC 7405 (a)(1)(D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.
d. Physical Standards - Applicant must meet the physical standards established for this positio! n.
e. English Language Proficiency - Applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Definitions
(1) Creditable Experience
(a) Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as Â"core competenciesÂ") associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of 1 year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.
(b) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic requirements identified in paragraph b. above. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.
(c) Part-Time Experience. Part-time mexperience as a DRT is creditable according to its r! elationship to full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive 1 w! eek of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.

General Radiologic technologists perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers. The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. They prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations. All diagnostic radiologic technologists must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS).

(1) GS-05
(a) Experience or Education. None Beyond the basic requirements.
(b) Assignment. Employees at this level serve in a DRT career development position. It is expected that they receive guidance from more experienced staff members for! more commplex patient issues, and require daily and direct supervision.

(2) GS-06
(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics needed to provide general radiologic technology services in a therapeutic setting. in addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
OR
(b) Education. The successful completion of a 4-year baccalaureate degree program in radiography or other directly related field to diagnostic radiology/imaging.

(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of basic technique standards for minimum radiographic exposure;
2. Knowledge of anatomy and positioning;
3. Knowledge of all patient safety procedures;
4. Knowledge of radiographic producing equipment; and
5. Ability to le! arn basic computer functions.

(3) GS-07
(a) Experience. At! least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics needed to provide general radiologic technology services in a therapeutic setting and/or in a specialized area. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
OR
(b) Education: The successful completion of 1 full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree program in radiography or other directly related field related to diagnostic radiology/imaging. Education may relate to the duties of a specific position or to the occupation, but must be appropriate for the position being filled.
(c) Certification. Certification by ARRT in one of the specialized areas of radiologic technology is highly desirable, in addition to certification by ARRT as a general radiologic technologist.
(d) Demonstrated Knowl! edge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality in the digital system;
2. Knowledge of different contrast material required for the requested study;
3. Knowledge of radiation rotection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, appropriat beam limitation to anatomical area, and employing lead shielding when performing standard or fluoroscopic procedures;
4. Knowledge of the function of computed radiography, Phosphor cassettes and computedd radiography (CR) readers;
5. Knowledge of PACS systems, CDROMS, and basic computer skills;
6. If the position is supervisory in nature, ability to manage and supervise employees; and
7. If the position is supervisory in nature, ability to coordinate staff development and training.

(4) GS-8
(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core com! petencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates p! ossession of the knowledge, skils, abilities, and other characteristics needed to provide general radiologic technology services in a therapeutic setting and/or in a specialized area. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(b) Certification. Certification by ARRT in one of the specialized areas of radiologic technology is highly desirable, in addition to certification by ARRT as a general radiologic technologist.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to chck system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines;
2. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed;
3. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results;
4. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed;
5. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the cutomer base, p! atients, staff, visitors, and volunteers; and
6. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

Physical Requirement! s: Stand for long periods of time while repeating same movements or walking. Bending and twisting body to lift, push, and pull heavy objects. Lift, carry, or move objects weighing up to 45 pounds. Stand for as much as 85% of work time. Transfer, lift, and physically place patients in radiographic positions that can weigh hundreds of pounds. Reach above shoulder level in order to perform work. Move, adjust, and manipulate a variety of radiographic equipment. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
