The Recreation Therapy Aide at Laurel Heights Hospital must be able to provide expertise in creating and leading psychoeducational groups for children and adolescents with mental health and co-occurring diagnosis.
Responsibilities:
- Report to the Recreation Therapy Manager.
- Lead enriching evening and weekend programming for the acute and residential levels of care, coordinate with the multidisciplinary team to plan and facilitate on-campus (and off-campus) activities for the youth.
- Responsible for collaboration with recreation therapy team in scheduling activities, preparing materials, planning, and managing a budget, and leading the groups.
- Ensure youth safety, encourage engagement, and help youth use skills to manage challenging behaviors and work towards their treatment goals.
- Create and maintain the token economy and incentive attendance.
- Complete documentation in the time specified.
- Identify ways to improve the department and create action plans to achieve those goals.
- Assist with weekly community meetings.
- Attend and participate in treatment team meetings, departmental meetings, and recreation therapy team meetings.
- Any other duties specified.

Qualifications:
Qualifications
Education: Associates Degree or higher
Experience: 1 year experience working with behaviorally disordered children/adolescents, preferably those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or related developmentally disabled.
Our Recreation Therapy Aide must have the ability to work under CTRS to implement therapeutic recreation activities provided by the CTRS and function as member of multi-disciplinary team, and provide a lead role with hands-on facilitation for groups.
- The individual must have skills in assessing motor skills, cognition, and social functioning with ability to document progress notes for patients.
- The individual must possess physical endurance and stamina.
- The individual must be able to obtain lifeguard certification within 1 year of employment if necessary. Skills are required in dealing courteously with the public and other staff within organization and firm knowledge of human behavior or principles of psychology.
- Must be able to prioritize and manage time, problem-solving abilities, use of appropriate social skills, including role modeling and respect for staff and children.
- Must be able to show empathy toward children and adolescents, knowledge of child growth and development.
- Practice of therapeutic/professional boundaries; have a willingness to seek/accept from CTRS.
