About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030! Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury ! Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
Echocardiography technicians at the full performance level, identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings and Doppler. They incorporate the causes and results of a variety of symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination. They change and develop sounding techniques to accommodate such variables as limited patient mobility, variation in physical condition or dimension of the patient, presence of prosthesis or foreign objects, and ultrasonic respo! nse of different body parts. They produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education - There is no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
Licensure or Certification - not required for this occupation; however, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
Physical Requirements - Standing for long periods of time while repeating same movements or walking. Bending and twisting body to lift, push, and pull heavy objects. Lift, carry, or move objects weighing up to 45 pounds.
Englist Language Proficiency - Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken an! d written English.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Your salar! y and grade will be determined by the Professional Standards Board (PSB). The PSB is a peer review process. The PSB will review your individual qualifications, education, professional training/internship(s) and professional experience to determine the most appropriate salary and grade based on your individual accomplishments.
GS-4/5- Basic Requirements
GS-6-
Experience- At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower graded level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities-
1. Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure.
2. Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to Holter monitoring and ability to perform such tes! ts.
3. Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment.
4. Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action.
5. Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including exercise stress testing.
Certification- No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
GS-7 -
Experience- At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities-
1. Knowle! dge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ab! ility to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias.
2. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures.
3. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue.
4. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians.
5. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation.
Certification- No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.
GS-08 LEVEL (this is the full performance level): Requires a minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in Federal service to qualify for this Medical Instrument Tec! hnician (Echocardiography Technician) position. Specialized experience would be experience which provided you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and which is typically related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as: operating, supervising the operation of, or instructing in the operation of diagnostic equipment used to graphically record the position and motion of the heart walls or the internal structure of the heart and neighboring tissue by the echo obtained from beams of ultrasonic waves directed through the chest wall;conducting diagnostic echocardiography in complex and unusual cases; and performing (Noninvasive) transthoracic bubble studies and contrast echocardiography, (invasive) stress echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography.
EDUCATION CAN NOT BE SUBSTITUED FOR EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-08 LEVEL
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, an! d Abilities-
KSA 1. Ability to produce diagnostic quality imag! es and Doppler frequency shift recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral display, and colorflow Doppler imaging.
KSA 2. Knowledge of normal echocardiographic findings and deviations produced by a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases.
KSA 3. Ability to perform complex procedures such as cardiac studies of the four chambers of the heart and valves using sector scanning techniques to detect stenotic and incompetent valves, chamber enlargement, and pericardial effusion and cardiovascular studies deriving pressure gradients across obstructed valves, etc.
KSA 4. Ability to perform complementary ultrasonic examinations (including noninvasive) transthoracic, Bubble studies and contrast echocardiography, (invasive) stress echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography.
KSA 5. Ability to adapt transducer positioning, instrument controls, and examination techniques to the individual patient being studied and the pr! oblem being evaluated including recognizing pertinent abnormalities and documenting abnormal findings.
