DUTIES:
Tour of Duty: Based on the needs of the service. Tour of duty for extended hours (as late as 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm) in Nashville to include Saturdays.

The Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner position is located in the Mental Health Care Line, Mental Health Outpatient Clinics and reports the Chief, Psychiatry Section, who in turn is under the direct supervision of the Chief, Mental Health Care Line. The Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner performs diagnostic examinations, and treats patients in a recovery focused interdisciplinary environment. The NP provides services within the individualÂ's scope of practice, uses sound judgment in assessing patients and evaluating their care needs, forms a plan of care including prescribing and administering appropriate medications, providing individual and family counseling, providing referrals to other disciplines as needed, and acting as a liaison for patients with their other hea! lth care providers, guardians, and their families. The NP maintains coh! esive relationships which are mutually supportive of administration, clinical practice, and patients. The NP collaborates with the managing physician as necessary in the evaluation of patients. identifies internal and external resources and initiates appropriate referrals. Specific duties include but are not limited to: Providing direct psychiatric care to Veterans as directed by the Mental Health Service Line; Providing psychiatric consultation services, both within and external to the service line; and Providing psychiatric care that is consistent with all VA policies including polices regarding recovery and suicide prevention.

Position may entail other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizenship:
Citizen of the United States

Licensure:
Condition of employment.

Active, full, current and unrestrict! ed licensure as a Graduate Professional (RN) Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), if the United States or the District of Columbia.

A nurse who has, or has ever had, any registration(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health or designee.

In addition

nurse practitioner must be licensed

as a nurse practitioner,

or otherwise recognized

as a nurse practitioner

in a State (possess a masterÂ's degree from a

program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE), and maintain full and

current certification as a nurse practitioner

Graduate of a school of professional nursing (RN)

The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for prof! essional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing.

In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment.

Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work.

A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA.

Bridge programs that confer a masterÂ's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a BachelorÂ's Degree is not awarded.

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (see paragraph 2a(3)) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Physical Standards/Requirements:
All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the p! osition.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a re! lated field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree! in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

If MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN required.

Basis Life Support (BLS) Certification is preferred.
