About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a sixty-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1 Facility and one of the most complex medical cent! ers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a f! ull range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Work Schedule:

  • Work hours are Monday through Friday during approved day tour shifts (i.e., 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m.); however, some of these positions may be modified to provide for extended clinic hours including we! ekends, to support the Department of Veterans Affairs mission to provid! e the best care possible at hours convenient to our Veteran population. On call may be required after 4:30pm and on weekends and holidays. The ten (10) holidays observed by the Federal Government are: New YearÂ's Day, Presidents Day, Martin Luther KingÂ's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and any other day specifically declared by the President of the United States to be a national holiday.

INTRODUCTION:
The incumbent serves
as a physician supervisor and serves as the leading psychiatrist in the Mental
Health Service (MHS) Outpatient Mental Health Clinic and provides comprehensive
clinical services to veterans and their families primarily in the Outpatient
Mental Health Clinic at VAMC Memphis.
The incumbent will perform general psychiatric assessment and treatment
in a multi-disciplinary setting! composed of psychiatrists, psychologists,
psychiatric social workers, nurses, physician extenders and a variety of
rehabilitation/recovery therapists. Additional duties include:

Ensures
efficient operation of the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in MHS. Be a
viable and primary member in establishing Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary
Teams within VAMC Memphis.

·
The
incumbent will work closely with his/her colleagues to provide comprehensive,
state-of-the-art mental health care.

·
The
incumbent shall work under the direction of the Section Chief of
Psychiatry. Employee will be required to perform duties on his/her own
initiative. The incumbent will supervise all psychiatrists and physician
extenders and other disciplines in the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic.

·
The
incumbent will operate in a manner promoting success in all applicable
performance measures a! nd ensuring compliance with all applicable accreditation
standards.! The employee shall act in a thoroughly professional manner at
all times. He/she shall work in harmony with other members of the
professional and technical staff; tact and courtesy are mandatory when
interacting with patients and staff.

The
psychiatrist will be involved with supporting, promoting, and enhancing the
Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship programs at the VAMC.

·
The
incumbent will rotate on-call coverage with other Memphis VAMC psychiatrists
and assist in cross coverage throughout the mental health service when other
psychiatrists are on leave.

Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.

Licensure and Registration - Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA Educational requirements.

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiat! ry

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree result! ing from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required. First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed OR Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an ap! plicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
Drug Enforcement Agency number (DEA) is required to prescribe medication.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
A Tennessee medical license is highly desired as it allows the incumbent to participate in involuntary custody hold and commitment activities.
Completion of an accredited residency training program in general psychiatry.
Familiarity with mental health law, including the procedures for involuntary commitment and treatment.
Board certification in Psychiatry is preferred, but must be board eligible.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Psychiatrist should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 2 hours) walking (up to 2 hou! rs), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, an! d repeated bending.
