About the Memphis VA Medical Center:
The VAMC in Memphis, TN consi! sts of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC).

It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system.

DUTIES:
The social worker provides comprehensive social work services through a broad range of interventions in a mental health setting (inpatient and out-patient). Clinical and administrative services are provided primarily as a clinical social worker as a member of the mental health treatment team under the supervision of Chief, Mental Health Service or designee. Incumbent carries full professional responsibility for cases presenting a wide range of complex psychosocial and environmental problems with no limitation as to the difficulty of services that would be performed as an experienced masterÂ's degree social worker.

The incumbent must be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LSCW).

Duties will primarily be within the ! Inpatient Psychiatry Units and may be assigned to other clinical areas as needed for the VA Medical Center's mission.

Duties include the following:
Provides comprehensive social work services to Veterans and their families on Acute Psychiatry Inpatient Units at VAMC Memphis. Services include provision of high quality comprehensive pyschosocial services to Veterans, families and related eligible indviduals. Case management, clinical treatment, advocacy, and coordination of linkages to other appropriate Veterans Administration community services providers and/or agencies are avenues utilized by the incumbent when addressing presistent and long term mental health needs. This is accomplished in collaboration with other members of the inpatient clinical team and/or other interdisciplinary treatment teams as appropriate. The incumbent provides a wide range of services in concert with multiple mental health specialized programs related or supportive disciplines! . The incumbent carries the full professional responsibility for cases ! assigned, including a wide range of complex psychosocial and environmental problems, interventions, techniques and approaches.

Work Schedule: Working days and hours will be set to support mental health services as needed. Working hours may be modified or be set to extend services after normal working hours.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.

License or certification by a state to independently practice social work at the

ADVANCED

level.

Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of work ! may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-11 LEVEL (Full Performance Level):

Requires a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree professional social work experience in the field of health care. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.

SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 LEVEL:
To meet the required specialized experience for the GS-11 level, applicant may substitute a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social wor! k. You must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.

Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services.

Ability to independently assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patientÂ's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family and interdisciplinary treatment team.

Ability to independently conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological) and the differential influences of the environment, society and culture.

4.

Knowledge and experience in the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.

5.

Knowledge of psychosocial treatment and ability to independently implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. This requires independent judgment and skill in utilizing supp! ortive, problem solving or crisis intervention techniques.
